Ash, Dust and Tar #1, 2025

American white ash, marble dust, tar, acrylic medium, glue

143 x 78 x 59cm

Despite retaining the elements that might suggest trauma, injury, mortality, the works up till now appear pristine, pure, like artefacts or remains washed up on the beach, scoured by the sand, bleached by the sun.  Or hovering in space, perhaps ascending to an afterlife.

But, with the addition of tar to the list of materials, the reading of the latest work slips into the inverse, a return to the earth, to darkness, the blackening of mould, an ancient peat bog which can preserve bodies while lending them the deep lustre of bronze, or a tar pit, the product of what was also once living matter.
